Press Room / 8 Things that make Project Brief useless

30. 11. 2009

Project Brief is something like a destination map for the development of any type application be it a simple entertaining web site or an enterprise level application. Thus detailed exactness is of crucial importance when filling it in and such explanations as listed below make the brief useless in a measure:

  • 1. "I need something almost like www.bidhere.com" (what do you imply when saying "almost like"?);
  • 2. "Main page like :" (it will be more efficient if you state your preferences exactly: composition of the page, any particular feature);
  • 3. "You can get a more clear idea of what I want on :" (still, the idea will be clearer if you indicate what exactly attracts you in the provided example);
  • 4. "Previous developer told me it will take : hours" (the duration of the development depends on specialist's skills and experience, thus time estimations may differ from one services provider to another. We won't try to correspond to your previous partner, we will provide with our best resources);
  • 5. "etc." (IT project is a precise and logic development thus every request should be listed);
  • 6. "Give me rough estimations of how much it may cost to develop a :" (rough estimations will be either too low or too high, and of course will not be absolutely reliable);
  • 7. "Additional functionality will be included in the final contract" (the whole development should be analyzed as an entity therefore all the functionalities have to be previewed beforehand);
  • 8. "List of all the functions will be discussed in details with the right candidate" (as stated above development requirements should be analyzed in full volume, only on obtaining all your details we will be able to suggest the solution that suits you best).

Each customer as well as each development is unique and requires individual consideration; we've just tried to generalize the mistakes that are common for most of case of filling the brief in. Avoiding such comments will simplify the understanding of development requirements by the programmers and speed up the process.

Sincerely Yours,
Concept Soft
