Press Room / Thanksgiving Day

26. 11. 2009

"Thanksgiving Day is the one day that is purely American."
O. Henry

A real time of turkeys, cranberries, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. A time for Indian corn, holiday parades and giant balloons. This year on November the 26th American nation will gather in families to offer thanks and to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.

The history of the holiday goes back to the times of Pilgrims, to their first winter, to the following autumn first good harvest and to their Indian friends who had taught them how to survive in new land. Namely this knowledge left them alive, so a great celebration was held and Pilgrims thanked God for the helping hand that they were given.

Still Thanksgiving celebrations were not observed regularly in the years after 1621. Only when in 1789 George Washington declared November the 26th as a "day of public thanksgiving and prayer" the Thanksgiving custom was spread throughout the country. Nowadays it became annual and very important holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November throughout the country.

Times have changed the traditions and values. Undoubtedly modern Americans do not celebrate that distant harvest; but guess that people do have reasons to be grateful for: relatives’ good health, well paid job, success in business, etc. Life is very trying and may seem unjust from time to time, still finding something even small to be sincerely thankful for makes it brighter and happier. Let this great feeling of gratitude to God for all the good things in life accompany you the whole year through!
